Top 100 Songs of 2008 [30-21]

And we crack the top 25...

The Sugar Oaks hooked me up with this song earlier in the year during the summer time and it has been a favorite ever since. It opens with a opening guitar lick that could be straight out off of John Mayer's pre-Continuum fret board and showcases The Sugar Oaks guitar work best. I'm a sucker for clever guitar riff, so I'm a big fan of this one. Also, according to the band, this song took over five years to fashion into the form it holds today. They also call "the little jewel" of their No One Can Love You Like Me EP - I agree whole-heartedly. I would also like to applaud the excellent usage of the flute in this song.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I think this song technically was released in 2007, but I saw it on Pitchfork's Top 100, so I figured I would include it in mine. That music in the beginning is what you get when you hit the demo button on an old casio keyboard - literally. I used to have on that did it and I cannot explain how awesome I think it is that they used it and made an awesome song from it. Well done.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Fireman is Paul McCartney and a producer named Young. This song is off their new album Electric Arguments (reviewed here) and captures all the flair and rock of "Helter Skelter." Sir Paul plays every instrument on the track - and album - and just provides us some more evidence that he is the greatest songwriter alive.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I was a professional baseball player this would be the song I would have playing when I stepped up to bat. Their new album, Attack & Release, is a winner. I highly recommend it to anyone... especially if you like air guitar.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is really the only song I've heard from The Helio Sequence. It makes great driving music and the drums are amazing in it, which is a requirement for great driving music.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Best concept for a song all year. From the POV of Toad waiting in Bowser's Castle for Mario to show up. There's not much more I need to say, just listen. If you're a fan, then check out this song as well.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TVOTR may have written one of the hottest songs of all time. "Lover's Day" is about one thing and one thing only - jumping your lover's bones with total disregard for anything and anyone else. Plenty of people have tried to write about something in this vein, but with a lack of grace and style, end up screwed. On the other hand, TVOTR nails it on the head. In an interview with Kyp Malone from Rolling Stone:

"I wrote it specifically to be a gender-neutral, sex-positive love song so anyone can apply it any aspect of life. But any time my daughter hears it, she says, 'That's for Jessie.' She's my girlfriend. Sex is the spice of life, you know. It's how we all got here. A lot of songs that are sex positive are very predatory — it's within the binary of gender politics. That's boring to me. It's not reflective of the world we live in."

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I love the double bass. I love puns. I love wordplay. I love NERD.

Achoo! Achoo!

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Love Lockdown" finished one vote behind MGMT's "Electric Feel" in the Biggest Earworm category of 2008's Terrapinion Awards. When he debuted this one at the VMA's it was stuck in my head for weeks. Auto-tune or not, this is a solid track and my favorite off 808's & Heartbreak.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a few years of cello under my belt from my days in elementary shool, so, needless to be said, I am a fan of the fact that Ra Ra Riot incorporates a cello player in the music/band. There's more to this band that a cello though. I think they are possibly the most underrated band of the year and easily one of my favorites. I wouldn't be surpised if they showed up on the countdown again...

The next ten songs...

This song comes off of the Fleet Foxes' Sun Giant EP. The EP which preceded their self-titled debut only gave a taste of what was to come. This song quickly became my favorite of the bunch and made me think the Foxes were not going to be another band that drops a killer EP and then falls short with their debut album. Also, I think their needs to be more songs about Greek islands.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is more to come from She & Him on this countdown, so stay tuned. This song has got some old school sound to it, but pay closer attention you can actually hear that M. Ward tears it up on his guitar. And how about those drums? Nice.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Come on it's a big, big world now. You gotta like what you see. And I do."

This song gets my pumped up. I think some of what Jim James sings gets lost in the excellent instrument play and his Muppety voice, but he consistently drops some lyrical gems on us. Take for example the one written above (also see "Librarian").

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Production from Kanye West, a Run DMC sample, and S.dot.Carter has someone to spit fire at... sounds like a recipe for a blazing hit. This one goes out to the that "bloke from Oasis" for that trash talk. For more on this fued, check here.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This song is pretty. The lyrics, the piano, her voice... all of it. That's pretty much all I have to say.

"You're the finest thing that I've done
The hurricane I'll never outrun
I could wait around for the dust to still
But I don't believe that it ever will."

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Haley Bonar is cool. Her new album Big Star is also cool. Although some of her music falls a little too close to the world of country, there are a couple honest, excellent tunes on the album - this being one of them. If she sounds familiar to you, it may be because you heard heron Andrew Bird's Armchair Apocrypha.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everyone is going nuts for Blitzen Trapper this year. "Furr" is the first single off their new album of the same name. It captures one of their two sides perfectly. There's the brambling back-woods folk rock of songs like Furr, but then they can flip a switch and rock your socks off with some guitar that I would liken to a poorly made laser beam. For some of that, check out "Wild Mountain Nation," my #3 song of 2007.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the best song names of 2008 comes from the Icelandic foursome. I believe the lyrics in this song are part Icelandic and part English gibberish, but it sounds awesome all mashed together. Besides being one of the most awesome sounding song names of 2008, it's probably the most accurate.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let me start by saying I am not the type of person who can just listen to dance music all the time. So as you can imagine, I'm not as big of a Hercules & Love Affair fan as everyone else was this year. That being said, this song is pretty sweet.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have to give it up to Kanye on 808's & Heartbreak, it's fun to listen to. Full of computerized beats and tacky lyrics that grow on you with time, this song has it all, plus some strings and robot noises. Someone at Stereogum said this song would fit in perfectly on a mix tape with something from Vampire Weekend - I agree.

Top 100 Songs of 2008 [50-41]

And here comes the Top 50!

So although I enjoy this song, I think I ranked it too high on my top songs of the year. Rethinking it, I don't think it belongs in the Top 50. Anyway, it's still a solid song. It reminds me of some Oasis song I've never heard before.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The newest tune from the Outkast camp - Big Boi and 3000 tear this one up. "Royal Flush" is the first track off Big Boi's new album Sir Luscious Left Foot:The Son of Chico Dusty. Although it was originally supposed to be out by now, word is that they're going to each be releasing solo albums in the near future. Then they're going to wait until Dre drops The Detox and then release an Outkast album. In other words, we not be getting an Outkast album anytime within the decade...

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I only first heard Benji a couple weeks before putting this list together, but this is his second appearance on the countdown. His debut album was a double disc release that I've yet to hear, but listening to it is on the top of my list. This song is simple, easy, and I can completely imagine it as a cover of some early Beatles song that McCartney wrote.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, so you may know this song from that Samsung Behold commercial, but it's actually a great song on its own. That guitar is killer - reminds me of The Fratellis. I owe this one to Samsung and T-Mobile.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The more I listen to Ida Maria the more I like her. She's like some awesome mix of old school No Doubt, Janis Joplin, and maybe the good side of Coutney Love (existent?). She seems like the kinda girl who would be awesome to hang out with and she's definitely the most intruiging artist I found out about in '08. Also she currently is posted in Sweden... with just about every other awesome new artist.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For whatever reason, it took me awhile to get into Santogold. Was it the fact that she's barfing glitter on her album cover? Probably, but that's neither here nor there. Anyway, since I'm just finally coming around to her now this is the only song I've really got to listen to. That being said, this song is sick - and I do not mean sick as in it makes me want to barf glitter.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Something makes me think I only included this song because I felt an obligation to. What made me feel that? I don't know. I wonder if Joe Satriani is pissed by my choice. We'll just have to see how that shakes out... I may need to add an asterisk to #44.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So this one get's stuck in my head a lot. And you should know her name by now, it's Katie White... and I will call her darlin'. If you like this song, check out "Great DJ" and "Shut Up And Let Me Go."

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More from The Explorers Club. This song is my favorite they have written. Yes, I'm a sucker for harmony and yes, this song has a ton of it. I dared myself to write this blurb without mentioning the Beach Boys or Brian Wilson, but I can't - "Don't Forget The Sun" nails that Beach Boys sound right on the head.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yo, this song feels big... like not big in a sense of weight or gaining weight or nothing like, but like collasal. Dwayne Carter and Sean Carter team up for this epic off Tha Carter III where Jay-Z passes the torch to the new Greatest Rapper Alive - Lil Wayne. Weezy doesn't take it lightly either, he uses the spotlight to cement himself above the rest of those April Babies. How high will Weezy fly with Hova's blessing... we may need a ladder that's forever to find out.

"Young Carter go farther, go further, go harder
Is that not why we came?
And if not, then why bother?"

Chuch.

Top 100 Songs of 2008 [60-51]

This post rounds out the bottom fifty... The rest will follow in the upcoming days. Stay tuned!

The Black Keys are straight up rock. They tore it up at Virgin Festival this year in Baltimore and their new album tore it up just as much. The fact that just two guys make all this racket is impressive. I'd like to see them battle the Jack & Meg. The Black Keys v. The White Stripes... I think that would make a piano.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Benji Hughes is another intriguing artist I discovered for myself this year. He reminds me a little of Matthew Sweet but I can't put my finger on why. Anyway, how awesome is the opening verse to this song:

"You had a date with me
On April 17th
I showed up at the Dairy Queen
Where we were supposed to meet
I got there at 4:53
We were supposed to meet at 5
I had a Butterfinger Blizzard and some fries..."

I like that.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This guy's voice reminds me a little of Jaymay's. To be honest, I heard this song right before I started this list and it might be prematurely high on it. It's still a pretty cool song though and I don't regret including it.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This one's just catchy. What is that riff played on, violin? I haven't really listened to anything else from these Brit's but I'm going to soon - I just can't get past this one.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a quiet one from My Morning Jacket's new album Evil Urges. It's exactly what it sounds like it's about - a sexy librarian. But it goes deeper than that, and besides the fact that Jim James calls it the "interweb" instead of internet, this song has my favorite lyric of the year:

"Duck into the men's room
Combin' through my hair
When God gave us mirrors
He had no idea..."

That's deep Jim. I'm going to go reflect on that.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I believe Ra Ra Riot are the most underrated artists of the year. Give these guys and gals another year or two and they'll be all the rage. There's more coming from them on this countdown.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tha RAC stands for The Remix Artist Collective. Their goal is to bring back the glory of the remix. They've done albums for Stereogum and also released the Nintendo vs. Sega EP which this tune comes off of. Those two songs mashed are Bowser's Theme and the overworld music from World 1 in Super Mario Bros. 3 - and no I did not look that up, it's coming straight off the dome.

Official Site

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I owe this one to NHL 09. "Nine In The Afternoon" is a key song on the soundtrack to that game that not only makes the game more fun but opens my eyes to Panic! Anyway, I was somewhat familiar with their other popular hits, but this one I actually enjoyed... very much I might add. There's a certain kind of Beatles feel to it.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lykke Li is one of my favorite artists of the year and I cannot wait until she releases more music. The 22 year old Swedish sweet heart released a charming debut this year, Youth Novels, and popped up all over the place singing about it. She performed this one in a bathroom.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Welsh singer dropped her breakthrough album Rockferry this year and "Mercy" is it's bouncy, soulful lead single. If you like this song you should check out the rest, they're also quote good. I recommend "Rockferry" and "Warwick Avenue."

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's it for now. More to come in the next few days...

The next installment.

If I was going to beat somebody up really badly or run from cop cars on foot I would want this song playing in the background.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Someone once said that Ray is "a pure soul." I can't remember who, but I'd like to see someone argue with that... or his beard. Anyway, this one's off his new album Gossip In The Grain.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jim James plays an omnichord throughout this song. It's one of the weirdest, coolest instruments I've ever seen. I would love to have one just to fool around with. Anyway, if "Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Part 1" didn't exist to contrast this one, I'm not sure if it would be on the countdown. Regardless, it's a good song. Here them play it in a Black Cab here.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Daniel Lanois is just a great songwriter and producer. I don't really have much more to add on the subject except Brian Blade is one drums and Garth Hudson is on keys. It's a good one.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another song from TV On The Radio makes the cut. I don't really have much to say about this one... I just like it. I will say this though - don't the verses in this song sound suspiciously close to the lullaby that Conan O'Brien sings occasionally on Late Night?

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We finally get to the first Vampire WEekend song on this countdown. Recently voted Most Overrated Artist of 2008, they debut on the countdown at #65 with "Campus." I would like to take this time to say that I was not a proponent behind their election as Most Overrated Artist. I think they're a very talented bunch and I can't fault them for going to an Ivy League School and wearing Sperry's... they're comfortable.

MySpace

Also, listen to the original (and better) version with more strings here.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't really know anything about Taken By Trees except for the fact that she is from Stockholm, Sweden and has recorded a simple, yet awesome cover of Guns 'N Roses' "Sweet Child O' Mine." They say less is more and this song fits well under that logic.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the first time, Oberst has dropped the Bright Eyes monicker and released an album under his own name. If I recall correctly he shipped out to Mexico to record this whole album. You can definitely hear where he was at when he wrote this one. Unfortunately I never got around to listening to the rest of this album. I've got to get on that...

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I got into The XYZ Affair big time last year with their song "All My Friends." These Brooklyn boys have been quietly dropping EP's and songs here and over the past few years. This one's about a straight edge kid handing out the advice that "the best parties to skip are in the summertime" because "all your friends are too gone to care you're not there." It's also got a pretty sweet music video.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Despite the fact that the title of this Coldplay tune sounds like some strange VH1 reality show, I think it's one of the best on the album. My favorite part is "Reign Of Love" tacked onto the end. On any other Coldplay album, this would have been the equivalent of "Parachutes" or "Life Is For Living" - some pretty little excerpt that they couldn't work into a full song. Enter producer Brian Eno who mixes up the whole formula and instead of a hidden track at the end of Viva La Vida we get this solid combo.

The third ten...

"We are not the same I am a Martian."

There is no excuse for why Lil Wayne is not one of Barbara Walters' Most Intriguing People of 2008. This man is absolutely ridiculous and, in my opinion, absolutely brilliant... it consistently boggles my brain. Anyway, Weezy knows this too and this song he proclaims it. How about this verse...

"They don't make 'em like me no more
Matter of fact, they never made 'em like before
I'm rare like Mr. Clean with hair
"

You bet your bargain bin brains that there's more to come from Lil Wayne on this list.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More Fleet Foxes! There's melodies, harmonies, intriguing lyrics, and a koto... sounds like a winner to me. Plus there's mention of missing a "connecting flight," which you forget exist while listening to the Foxes.

"Lets drive to the countryside
Leave behind some green-eyed look-a-likes
So no one gets worried, no"

That is appealing.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sometimes I think this song is on here as another excuse to talk about Lil Wayne. There's some good advice too - "never marry Robin Givens."

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ida Maria is probably the most interesting thing I've listened to all year. Listening to her music is kind of like listening to a some kind of crazy pillow fight party that's got out of hand and escalated into an actual fist fight. Also, I really thought this song was going to be used this past season in How I Met Your Mother... I was mistaken.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can hear this one at the end of some semi-melodramatic teen movie. It's rainy, someone's walking away from a party or something because he blew it with the girl he likes, but then she comes running to catch him and tell him she loves him. That being said, it's a really good song and should not be subject to that scene.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, so I still don't really get all the fuss behind Department of Eagles. I haven't heard their entire album yet, maybe that's why. Anyway, I used to not really like this song, but it grew on me. It grew all the way to my 75th favorite song of the year...

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is TVOTR's first appearance on the countdown. They will have more to come. This is the opener off their new album Dear Science, - which is amazing. Definitely check it out.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More Weezy. In this song he takes on the persona of Weezy MD - taking on patients who are failing at the rap game. After "standing out like Andre 3k," "kicking it like a Sensei," and putting "some more vocab in your IV," he saves Hip Hop's life. On top of that he drops this dumbfounding line:

"Swagger tighter than a yeast infection
Fly, go hard, like geese erection"

Amazing. I don't really have anything to say to that, except welcome back hip hop, Wayne saved your life.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Talk about a summer anthem. Their songs are sing-a-long songs. This one would be perfect for a party at the moon tower. There's definitely more to come from The Hold Steady on this countdown.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This song just rolls along. I would not hesitate to call it infectious. Great drums. Great piano. You gotta love it when guys and girls alternate lead vocals in a song.

The next ten...

This one's a pretty simple song. I just like it I guess. I keep imagining someone making Pam-Jim-Karen love triangle tribute video to this song and putting it on YouTube. As far as I know, it has not been done.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ah, the Fleet Foxes - arguably my favorite band of the year... if that makes sense. Anyway, this song is about an baby named Oliver James who is abandoned in a river. The closer form their self-titled debut, this song puts a perfect lingering intend to the album. Also, this will not be their last appearance on this list.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Owen Homes is an unlikely culprit to produce such a folksy tune. If you don't know who Owen is, besides being the man behind Gospel Music, he is the bassist of The Black Kids. Produced by Jesse Mangum, this one is the opener off his debut Bless Your Heart EP, which I reviewed earlier in the year. Whoever can sing a whole verse by naming only vegetables and herbs earns a spot in my book.

MySpace
Download Here

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is another simple tune that I love the lyrics of:

One too many goals
The measure of your worth
Can sink your weight in gold

Plus there's some Portugese at the end. I can't wait to bust this one out in the summertime.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, so this song get's stuck in my head big time - not the verse or the "womanizah womanizah" part... it's all the other "ah ahs." Plus the music video is pretty awesome. Anyway, this one marks Britney's comeback - the best of the year according to the Terrapin Sound staff. So welcome back Brit.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This song closes out Coldplay's newest album, Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends. It's the more grim part of that title but don't let the name fool you, it's not that grim-sounding of a song. Coldplay takes a page out of The Beatles' Abbey Road book for the end of this one.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There's a couple things I like about this from Weezer. First is Rivers' new mustache. Second is that this song produced our Video Of The Year, which tapped the entire YouTube world for its making. And third is that the song is actually good and sounds like a cut from one of their first albums.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is not the only song off Kanye's 808's & Heartbreaks that is going to appear on the countdown. Despite Kanye's reprehensible grammar [re: "why do she be so mad at me fo'?"] this song is actually very good. On top of that the music video for it is rotoscoped, which is probably my favorite thing ever.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So basically ?uestlove really likes this song, so I started to really like this song.

"most idiots will probably be on some "scoff...this aint no CRAZY"--well you dumb ass parrots--this to me digs deeper." -?uestlove

Don't be a dumb ass parrot. Dig it.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Listen to this song and by the end of it, you'll realize it's not what you originally thought it was about. Ant really nails that piano too.

Top 100 Songs of 2008 [100-91]

Happy Holidays! Today, Christmas Eve, brings the One Year Anniversary of Certain Songs Music Blog. We've been through a lot through this past year, and even though things have fizzled 'round these parts over the last two months, we're still going strong over at Terrapin Sound. Anyway, as an Anniversary and Christmas gift, the CSMB hiatus is being temporarily ended so I can present you my Top 100 Songs of 2008. Last year Wilco came out on top with "Impossible Germany" - who will be the big winner of 2008? You'll have to read to find out...

This husband and wife duo who make up Alt-Ctrl-Sleep come from Huntersville, NC and this is the first song I ever heard from them. It's a soft and simple song that has grown on me greatly over the year. At first listen, it didn't seem anything special to me but now I think of it as some sort of goodbye-lullaby... a lullagoodbye? Maybe lullaby already presumes goodbye... Anyway, it's a good tune. The only problem I have is with their name. Whenever I used to need the task manager, I said Ctrl-Alt...

LISTEN HERE
MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This song would fit in perfectly on a mix tape with The Black Kids. It's got that modern day eighties thing going on. Sparkadia comes to us via Sydney, Australia and just for your information, their might be a couple bands from Australia on this countdown...

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, so I'm not as into Hot Chip as a lot of people are. I don't know if that's because I'm not big on electronic/dancey music or I just haven't listened to enough of them. Anyway, a lot of people had this tune at the top of their lists... I included it.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So this is really the only song I've listened to from Tokyo Police Club, but I like it. These guys are a lot better than that other Tokyo band... Tokio Hotel. Yikes. Anyway, TPC is some solid rock music. At points, this song reminds me of something from Death Cab... maybe it's his voice. And how about those closing lyrics "Elephant shell/ You're my cave and I've been hiding out/ Will you tell me a little bit about/ A bit about yourself."

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some would say that Explorers Club are just a bad rip off of the Beach Boys - I disagree. Although it is impossible to mention this band without mentioning the Beach Boys in the same sentence, that does not mean they're a bad rip off. Sure they use harmonies and similar song structures as the Beach Boys, but you've still got to have talent to sound good doing it. And they do. Plus they can really play live - watch til the end of this video...

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was listening to "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers the other day when I proclaimed stated to my friends that there was not enough good Scottish music out there these days. Well, I still think that's true; however, Sons & Daughters are doing their part to end the drought. Can you picture this song in a Guy Ritchie fight scene? I can.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Horse Feathers, an outfit led by Justin Ringle, comes from the ever-more popular Portland, Oregon. Like those other Oregonians, Blitzen Trapper, Horse Feathers can really write a tune. The melody and harmony in the chorus of this one is a winner. I'm rather new to this band, but how can you go wrong with a voice like that, banjo, and violin? You can't... unless it's country music.

LISTEN HERE
MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is really the first Deerhunter song I think I've ever gotten into, so I can't say much else about the band. All I know is that the drums and bass in this song are almost an instant hook. And that three and a half minute jam at the end that's more the second half of the song is pretty epic.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You know that Neptune sound? This song's got it. That's a futuristic, space-hop, alien guitar riff they've got going is like someone invented a laser beam instrument. Even though this song butter-cupped me really bad as far as how good the rest of the album would be, the tune is still sweet. Plus the line "Mother f*cker are you ADHD? ADHD? ADHD? / You jump around like you ADHD! ADHD! ADHD! / You can't sit still like you ADHD! ADHD! ADHD!" makes me laugh every time. I think this song encompasses that awesome giant red gorilla on the album cover best.

MySpace

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Amos Lee channels his inner Ben Harper for this song. The aptly named "Ease Back" is nothing more than a porch-swing anthem to comfort a wayward friend. It also makes me want to crush a cup of wine.

Hiatus...

Some bitter-sweet news is coming from the way of CSMB today - as effective of about two weeks ago, the site has been and will be on indefinite hiatus. I've taken on major responsibilities on a new blog www.TerrapinSound.com where everything I would be writing here will now be posted. So the content will still be out there, just at Terrapin Sound, not Certain Songs.

Lykke Li sings and dances all over the place

Over the past few months, the Swedish sounds of Lykke Li have grown to be one of my favorites. In recent weeks she seems to be popping in and out public parks, street corners, and bathrooms to perform tunes off of her debut album Youth Novel. Check out video of her latest travels after the jump...
